Kakadu National Park - Part 1

 Covering nearly 20,000 square kilometres the name 'Kakadu' comes from an Aboriginal floodplain language called Gagudju, which was one of the languages spoken in the north of the park at the beginning of the 20th century.
Wednesday 13th July we entered Kakadu National Park.  We arrived at Gagudju Lodge, Cooinda about mid morning, booked a Yellow Water Cruise for 4.30pm. then went for a look at the Warradjan Aboriginal Cultural Centre.    The Yellow Water Sunset Cruise was really great, saw lots of salt water crocodiles and birds during the 2 hr cruise and near the end of the time we sat and watched the sun set over the wetlands - a beautiful sight.


If you want to try out the aboriginal word for Yellow Water it is (Noor-roong-oo-rooj-bar)  Good luck!!!!

If you zoom up on the yellow sign you might ask what David is doing on the wrong side of the gate?!!!!   The walk was actually closed because of crocs but.................

A caravan parked beside us at  Cooinda - zoom up on the name on the back of the van (I don't think it quite fits the image)!!!

Can you spot the croc?  or part of him - a very large male (that is HIS territory and no other would dare to intrude)!!!

We had a lot of company like this on the cruise.

    Looks like a lovely tranquil place... if you keep away from the crocs, anyway! Love the photo of the swimming croc. Don't think I've ever seen one in the wild! Guess Dad already had... but had you, Mum? The reflections are beautiful. Such smooth water would be great for waterskiing/ wakeboarding... and the crocs would be quite an incentive to stay upright!

    Have only seen crocs in a reptile park - very different seeing them in their natural home. I loved the reflections, took sooooo many photos of them. You wouldn't stay upright on a wakeboard when you hit a croc!!!!!

    Beautiful pics, Mum!! Bet you were a little nervous about the crocs during the cruise...? And what exactly was Dad doing on the wrong side of the gate?? Getting daring in his old age!! ;)

    I can't answer your second question Rox!! because I have no idea why he did that either. Guess when a gate is open you have to walk through it!!!!????
    No I wasn't nervous about the crocs being so close, too fascinated with them for that!!
