Sandalwood Factory

Thursday 8th September after lunch we visited The Sandalwood Factory.  It was an interesting place to visit and to learn more about the growing of Sandalwood from soil to oil.
Mount Romance is the world's largest single supplier of natural sandalwood oil. TFS is the parent company of Mount Romance.  This publicly-listed company holds the world's largest sustainable, ethical and environmentally-responsible resource of Indian Sandalwood (Santalum Album) with over 37 sq kms (3,700 hectares) of plantation trees established in Kununurra. W.A.
We took a drive around the area afterwards and looked at some of the plantations of sandalwood in all their different stages.  It was interesting to learn that the plantations need host trees of different kinds and growing years to be planted amongst the sandalwood trees which gives some of the plantations a rather untidy looks at certain stages.  To learn more you can go to      www.mtromance.com.au

Kununurra also is the only place in Australia where Chia is grown.
Chia is called the new super-food.
The Chia Co is the world's largest producer of natural, raw Chia seeds. The Chia Co farms are located in the pristine Kimberley region of Western Australia, exactly 15 degrees south of the equator. Growing Chia at this latitude provides the ideal conditions, maximizing the Omega 3 oil profile in every seed.

Also on the same afternoon we called in to the Hoochery for a look. It's a family owned and operated distillery, the oldest legal still in W.A. producing a variety of products such as Ord River Rum, Cane Royale Liqueur and Aquardiente (an Australian Ouzo) plus more.   The previous information was from the guide book and doesn't mean anything to me but it was recommended that we call in just to see the old building so we did.
