Spread though the grain growing regions of the country there are Grain Depots where the farmers truck the grain during and after harvest to be stored until it can be moved by truck or rail to be processed. These photo's are of the West Dalby Depot during this years sorghum harvest. There are 24 silo's at the depot and when they're full they start to create a sorghum pad on the ground for the surplus sorghum grain. This sorghum pad at present has 24,000 tons of sorghum grain on it but has the capacity when full to hold 32,000 tons. It's size now is approx. 150 metres long and 15 metres high so when full it will be even longer. In a previous year Owen's neighbour (whose family own numerous farms) harvested 12,000 tons of sorghum from their farms (that's half the amount in the sorghum pad from one grower)!!!!!!
Sorghum is used for stock feed and has a high energy, low protein content and is separated into 3 grades depending on the quality of the harvested product - grade 1, grade 2 and sorghum x.
