On Sunday afternoon we spent some time at Phoebe's Reserve not far from Badgingarra doing a wildflower bush walk and saw lots of new wildflowers we hadn't seen before. Then we headed off to find a place to stay for the night.

We stayed overnight just north of Jurien Bay at Sandy Cape Recreational Park - right beside the ocean but hidden by small sand dunes. Early next morning (Monday 17h October) before leaving we went for a walk along the beach and up the sand dunes to a lookout. Just as we were walking along the beach we spotted a sea lion swimming around in the bay only about 10metres off shore so we stopped and watched for awhile, it didn't seem to be worried about us at all. We were told later that there had been an injured sea lion seen swimming there a couple of days before so we guessed that was it.
Later that day we drove into the Nambung National Park to see the Pinnacles Desert.
The Pinnacles Desert is an area of varying coloured sand and thousands of limestone pinnacles, which range in size up to 5 metres tall and 2 metres thick at the base. They were formed thousands of years ago when ancient plant roots formed a weak cementation of calcite within the dunes and have been exposed by wind and shifting sands.
It was a really fascinating place and we spent some time driving and walking amongst the pinnacles. It has a rather eerie feel to the place as it seems like there is no living thing anywhere around.

ReplyDeleteThe second photo of wildflowers is the same flowers as in the post 'Wildflowers', the 7th photo taken at 12:18-at that stage they were all just in bud and I wondered if they did more than that-eventually found out how beautiful they were when they came out in flower!!
